Father of Light,
Before I open this book, open me.
Let the same Spirit who hovered over the waters,
who whispered through the prophets,
and who came down upon Mary at Nazareth,
come down quietly on me now.

Slow my reading. Soften my hearing. Loosen the grip of all the words I bring with me, so that Your Word can find room. Let this passage not pass through me, but lodge in me — until it becomes a small flame in my chest and a steadying hand at my back.

Through Christ the Word made flesh. Amen.
